Proverbs 28:26: He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered.

Insight

There is no sin that a man ought not to fear or to think himself incapable of committing, since we have in our corrupt will the seeds of every sin. None of us can safely presume that his heart may not hurry him into abominations that he can now contemplate only with horror. The best of men, when left to themselves, are mournful spectacles of weakness and instability. But blessed be our God, for our standing is not based on the uncertainty of man’s best purpose. It rests on the faithful promise, the unchangeable will, the free grace, and the almighty power of God. It does not rest on ourselves, but on the Rock, on which the church is immovably built. We value, then, a deep knowledge of our indwelling weakness and corruption. This study of the heart strengthens the principle of holy fear, which enables us to walk in wisdom and thus keeps us safe from the evils of a self-confident state. 1

Application

That from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:15

These verses reveal the frailty of our own heart and the greatness of His heart towards us who trust in Him for salvation and sanctification. Do not “follow your heart.” That would be a very dangerous decision. It will eventually lead to great heartache. Instead, follow Jesus. Trust His word and His way for your life. That would be very wise.

Motivation

Rest in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; Proverbs 3:5

A heart that is yielded completely to Him is a heart that knows His wisdom. – TWEET IT

Prayer

Father, how I long for the experience of Your love and truth pouring over my heart.
