Proverbs 6:32–35: Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul. Wounds and dishonor he will get, and his reproach will not be wiped away. For jealousy is a husband’s fury; Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will accept no recompense, nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.

Insight

King David was a brilliant strategist on the battlefield and a wise ruler on the throne, but he lost his common sense when he gazed at his neighbor’s wife and lusted for her. He was sure he could get away with his sin. Every stratagem David used to implicate Bathsheba’s husband failed, so he ended up having the man killed. Surely David knew that we reap what we sow, and reap he did, right in the harvest field of his own family. In today’s society, if a person has enough money and “clout,” he or she might be able to survive an adulterous scandal, but life is still never quite the same. Indulging in sexual sin is always a losing proposition. 1

Application

Ask yourself a few questions before committing this sin: Will the momentary pleasure outweigh the lifetime of pain? Am I ready to lose my family? Am I prepared to endure the loss of reputation and significant friends? Can I afford the financial responsibility of paying for two households? Can I bear the pain in my children’s eyes?

Motivation

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Matthew 7:13

Count the cost. Sin will cost you everything. – TWEET IT

Prayer

Father, please forgive me for failing to seek Your understanding in all things.
