Matthew 5:4: Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
Tears may be a sign of devotion. As recorded in Luke 7:37–39, a woman came into the Pharisee’s house where Jesus reclined, and brought an alabaster box of ointment. She stood at his feet weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears and wipe them with her hair. She kissed his feet and anointed them with ointment. When a Pharisee challenged Christ as to why He should receive the adoration of this sinful woman, He said that it was because she had been forgiven much. The forgiveness she had received produced a devotion that expressed itself not only in the gift of ointment, but also in the precious gift of tears. These were tears of devotion. These Scriptures show that there are many different reasons why tears may come. In all but a few instances, these tears are not a sign of weakness. They are in most cases the evidence of a depth of feeling that brings delight to the heart of God. When one—for whatever cause—finds that tears are his portion, he has the promise of God: “Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted.” 1
Your Word is Truth
God gave you emotions. When was the last time you cried at the feet of Jesus? Does His love still move you in devotion before Him? Do His promises fill you with joy?
