Proverbs 28:20: A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.

Insight

A faithful man is not likely to accumulate vast wealth in a world like this; but he will be rich in heavenly treasure and shall abound with blessings even in a temporal sense, for he who acts for God can count on God to act for him. If the getting of riches is made his life’s object he will not be acquitted when called to account for his methods and sharp practices. To become rich quickly is almost certain evidence of injustice somewhere. It is far better to be comparatively poor, but to maintain a good conscience, than to make haste to be wealthy and lose the sense of communion with God. 1

Application

And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:19–21

Jesus taught us to have an eternal perspective during our stay upon earth. Are you “hastening” to fulfill your earthly dreams or are you “hastening” towards greater faithfulness in the work for His Kingdom? How can you become “rich towards God?”

Motivation

A man with an evil eye hastens after riches, And does not consider that poverty will come upon him. Proverbs 28:22
