Proverbs 3:11–12: My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; For whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.
Insight
Our corruption is never so evident and our graces are never so apparent as when we are being disciplined by the Lord. We need this as much as we need our daily bread. Children of God are still children of Adam who have Adam’s will, pride, independence, and waywardness. Some people resent God’s rebuking them, while others faint under its weight. These rules imply much more than something that is just negative. Instead of resenting God’s rebuke, we are to be like the son who delights in it. Always remember that you are under the Father’s discipline. So do not resent it, but hang onto his rebuking hand and pour out your soul into his heart. Kiss the rod. Acknowledge that it is humbling but also enriching. 1
Application
Our reaction to His correction will reveal the real condition of our heart. If we protest or complain about His divine interruption, it usually means there is a deeper issue of sin that has taken root, unbeknownst to us. He will graciously continue with His corrective fire until we surrender our carnal desires. Once we welcome His holy intervention, then there will be repentance, renewal, and rejoicing.
Motivation
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. Matthew 5:13
When our salt is gone, His correction comes, to season us up once again. – TWEET IT
Prayer
Father, help me to learn that Your correction is another measure of Your grace.
