Proverbs 30:21–23: For three things the earth is perturbed, yes, for four it cannot bear up: For a servant when he reigns, a fool when he is filled with food, a hateful woman when she is married, and a maidservant who succeeds her mistress.
Insight
The people tremble because social turmoil follows the sudden elevation of inexperienced, unqualified people to positions of power and success. It is not appropriate (a) for a servant to become a king (the servant is unprepared), (b) for a fool (“one who lacks spiritual perception and sensitivity”) to be full of food (he might become bullheaded regarding the needs of others), (c) for an unloved (lit., “hated”) woman to be married (she brings grief to the marriage), and (d) for a maidservant to become a mistress (for she does not know how to direct others). Harmony in society is encouraged when people maintain their proper roles and do not assume positions they are incapable of handling. 1
Application
A continual dripping on a very rainy day And a contentious woman are alike; Whoever restrains her restrains the wind, And grasps oil with his right hand. Proverbs 27:15–16
Are you staying in your own lane, or are you cutting into someone else’s lane? Examine your attitude and behavior. Are you a blessing to others, or are you budding into other peoples business? Get back in your lane and run your own race.
Motivation
Luxury is not fitting for a fool, Much less for a servant to rule over princes. Proverbs 19:10
To wander from your position is to arrive in a place not prepared for you. – TWEET IT
Prayer
Father, please help me to keep focused on You and not on others.
