Jesus is Essential

John 20:26–27: And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

Jesus had heard Thomas’ words; nobody had to report them to Him. So, the next Lord’s Day, the Lord appeared in the room (again, the doors were locked) and dealt personally with Thomas and his unbelief. He still greeted them with “Shalom—peace!” Even Thomas’ unbelief could not rob the other disciples of their peace and joy in the Lord. How gracious our Lord is to stoop to our level of experience in order to lift us where we ought to be.

Our Lord’s words translate literally, “Stop becoming faithless but become a believer.” Jesus saw a dangerous process at work in Thomas’ heart, and He wanted to put a stop to it. It is not easy to understand the psychology of doubt and unbelief. Perhaps it is linked to personality traits; some people are more trustful than others. Perhaps Thomas was so depressed that he was ready to quit, so he “threw out a challenge” and never really expected Jesus to accept it. At any rate, Thomas was faced with his own words, and he had to make a decision. 1

Walking with Jesus

“Stop becoming faithless!” How do we do that? We start believing. We do not look for a sign, we look to Jesus. We must be in His Word with a greater hunger and thirst. We must forsake looking to the world or others for answers and look to Jesus with faith and a surrendered will. Faith means we actively trust the promises of Jesus.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5–6

When we believe, then we will see.

Praying

Lord, forgive me for asking for a sign. You on the Cross is sufficient enough.
