Jesus is Essential
Luke 10:38–41: Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.
Mary, sitting intently at Jesus’ feet, understood what even the apostles had missed. Though Jesus had repeatedly spoken plainly of his death, the disciples just could not accept it. The concept of a suffering Messiah did not coincide with their expectations of One who would deliver them from Roman oppression.
But Mary, listening to Jesus’ words more carefully, understood that he would die. So she anointed him for burial. The insight of these two sisters—evidenced in Martha’s grand confession and in Mary’s grand anointing of Jesus—came from the fact that they had given themselves to “one thing”—the “better” thing—listening to the Word of God. 1
Walking with Jesus
Being busy for God, but ignoring your fellowship with God, is a tragic mistake. If you have to chose one, be at His feet first. That is where the daily instructions are given, and the Holy Spirit power is received.
My soul melts from heaviness; Strengthen me according to Your word. Psalm 119:28
At the feet of Jesus is where we learn to love, and learn to live.
