Proverbs 30:15–16: There are three things that are never satisfied, Four never say, “Enough!”: The grave, The barren womb, The earth that is not satisfied with water— And the fire never says, “Enough!”
Insight
All of these are but pictures of the restless yearning, implanted in man’s bosom by the Fall. The world and all that it contains is not enough to fill and satisfy it. “Thou hast made us for Thyself,” said Augustine of Hippo, “and our hearts will never be at rest, until they rest in Thee.” How slow we are to learn the lesson! 1
Application
These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. Jude 12–13
The world promotes the road to success. The ladder of achievement. The carrot right in front of you. All are achievable, but never satisfying without a surrender heart to Jesus. The world will set you up for success, but it can never satisfy the longing of the soul. Ask Jesus to fill your emptiness with His fulness today.
Motivation
Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied. Proverbs 27:20
My heart is always barren until it belongs to thee alone. – TWEET IT
Prayer
Father, forgive me for looking to the world for approval, instead of resting in your finished work. Teach me to be satisfied with thee.
