John 19:25–27: Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
The first time we meet Mary in the Gospel of John, she is attending a wedding; now she is preparing for a burial. The hour had come! She was experiencing “the sword” that had been predicted years before. Her silence is significant; for if anyone could have rescued Jesus, it was His mother. All she had to do was announce that His claims were false—but she said nothing! What a testimony to the deity of Christ. Jesus assured her of His love, and He gave His choicest disciple, who rested on His bosom, to be her adopted son and to care for her. Whether that moment John took Mary away from the scene and took her home, we do not know. We do know that he cared for her and that she was among the believers in the Upper Room as they awaited Pentecost. Even while He was performing the great work of redemption, Jesus was faithful to His responsibilities as a son. What an honor it was for John to take his Lord’s place in Mary’s life! 1
Your Word is Truth
Nothing is more emotional than being with your family members at the time of death. The one dying, many times, is ministering to the ones living. Last words are lasting words. Why wait? Why not use your words today to love and encourage a family member (like your spouse, children, brother, sister, parents) Why wait until it is too late?
Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” –Luke 2:34–35
