The Life and Ministry of Jesus
Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.” But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. Matthew 12:22–25
Probably the Pharisees discovered this man and realized the difficult nature of his case. He was both blind and mute, so communication with him was almost impossible. The man could not see what someone might want him to do, and while he could hear instructions, he would not be able to respond.
Jesus immediately healed him by removing the demon, and the man both spoke and saw. The people were astonished and asked, Could this be the Son of David? In other words, “Is not this the promised Messiah, David’s Descendant who has come to rule over us and bring healing to our nation?” While the people were asking this question, the Pharisees were concluding that Jesus’ power must be attributed to Beelzebub, the prince of demons. 1
