Romans 5:6: For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
God has demonstrated His love for you, my friend, in that He gave His Son to die for you. He paid the penalty for your sin, and our holy God now can save you if you come His way. Of course, you’ll have to come His way. There is a mistaken idea today that you can come to Him your way. This isn’t your universe; it’s His universe. You and I don’t make the rules. He makes the rules. And He says that no man comes to Him except through Christ (see John 14:6). 1
Christ died for us, the ungodly, and so, as the apostle goes on to show, the mysteriousness of the divine love is revealed. We can understand that God should love the good, the righteous, the pure, the godly; but that the infinitely Holy should love the unholy and give his Son for their redemption is the wonder of all wonders. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). 2
Application
- Where can you get the spiritual strength to live a holy life?
- What kind of a person were you, when Christ died for you?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for saving me before the foundation of the world!
