Romans 6:14: For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

God’s design is that sin shall not be your master (“shall not rule as lord”; cf. v. 9). The reason this should not happen is that you are not under Law, but under grace. Paul had already explained that “the Law was added so that the trespass might increase” (Romans 5:20), and elsewhere he declared, “The power of sin is the Law” (1 Cor. 15:56). If believers were still under the Law, it would be impossible to keep sin from exercising mastery. But since believers are “under grace,” this can be done by following Paul’s instructions. 1

The Law was given to control the old nature. As a believer, you are not to live by the old nature. You have a new nature, and you are to yield yourself or present yourself to God. What a glorious, wonderful privilege it is to present ourselves to Him! 2

Application

  • If sin is dominating you, then you need to experience more of His grace.
  • If grace is dominating you, then you will be living a “walk in the newness of life.” (Romans 6:4)

Prayer

Lord, help me to live under the fountain of Your grace, with unwavering faith.
