Romans 2:7: Eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality.
The man who wants to work for eternal life may do so. He will be judged according to his deeds, but he is warned that they will avail nothing. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into that lake of fire” (Rev. 20:15). Trusting Christ as Savior puts your name in the “book of life.” Eternal life is not a reward for effort; it is a gift to those who trust Christ. 1
David committed some terrible sins; but the total emphasis of his life was obedience to God. Judas confessed his sin and supplied the money for buying a cemetery for strangers; yet the total emphasis of his life was disobedience and unbelief. True saving faith results in obedience and godly living, even though there may be occasional falls. 2
Application
- Eternal life begins before death. It’s an earthly decision for heavenly destination.
- To seek Him is to seek life. Is He your way, truth, and life?
Prayer
Lord, help me to be a person of continual commitment in the right direction.
