Romans 10:4–5: For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.”

The Law did not and could not of itself provide righteousness before God for individuals (Rom. 3:20). But Christ fulfilled the Law (Matt. 5:17–18) by keeping it perfectly during His sinless life and then gave His life in payment for the penalty of sin and the broken Law (Col. 2:13–14). The Law then pointed to Him as the Source of the God-provided righteousness it could not supply (Gal. 3:24). A godly Jew who trusted Yahweh and followed the Levitical system, including the sin offering and the trespass offering, would most likely be inclined to respond to Christ by faith and would receive God’s righteousness. He then could meet the requirements of the Law by the indwelling Holy Spirit (8:4). Conversely, a Jew who sought by works to establish his own righteousness would not recognize Christ as “the end of the Law” and would stumble over Him. 1

Application

  • God knew that we could never keep His laws based upon our own strength and self determination. He knew we would become law breakers, needing a Savior.
  • Christ fulfilled all the demands of the law by dying for us, so we could live for Him. How will you live for Jesus today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You’re just asking me to believe You for everything.
