Proverbs 6:16–19: These six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

Insight

God says, “I love,” but He also says, “I hate.” 1. “A proud look.” The literal is eyes of loftiness. It is the attitude that overvalues self and undervalues others. 2. God hates a “lying tongue.” The abuse of the tongue is something that is common to all races and all languages. 3. The third thing God hates is “hands that shed innocent blood.” God says that human life is precious and that when a murderer kills a man, he is to forfeit his own life. That is the teaching of the Word of God. 4. The fourth thing God hates is “an heart that devises wicked imaginations”—thoughts of iniquity. By the way, have you ever confessed to God what you have in your mind and in your heart? We all need to do that. We need to be cleansed. 5. “Feet that be swift in running to mischief.” The heart blazes the trail that the feet will follow. 6. “A false witness that speaks lies.” It is not an uncommon thing today for people to perjure themselves. 7. “He that sows discord among brethren.” My friend, causing trouble between family members or brothers in Christ or fellow workers is something that God hates. 1
