Proverbs 18:11: The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his own esteem.

Insight

How different from what we have just been considering is the fortress of the man who, knowing not the name of the Lord, trusts in his wealth, fondly fancying, in his conceit, that he is forever secure. Riches soon vanish away, and leave him, who had made them his confidence, desolate and forsaken. How often did the Saviour, when on earth, have to rebuke those who trusted in uncertain riches! 1

Application

Jesus spoke about balancing the right priorities in life in Luke 12:19–21: “And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

How well are you feeding your soul? Have you accumulated material and financial resources at the expense of having nothing stored up spiritually? Motivation

And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! Mark 10:24
