Proverbs 31:6–7: Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to those who are bitter of heart. Let him drink and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more.

Insight

The king’s mother is teaching her son to obey the Word of God. The most important ministry mothers and fathers have is the spiritual training of their children. The mother boldly warns Lemuel of some of the dangers he will face in life: sinful companions, strong drink, and a temptation to disobey the Word of God. Happy is that person who had a God-fearing mother who warned about sin, and happier is the person who heeded her warnings. 1

Application

I remember the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. 2 Timothy 1:5

Who is the one who tied your shoes when you were young? Who is the one who got you to all your Little League games? Who is the one who was there when you were hurt? Who is the one who welcomed all your friends into your home? Who is the one who told you that God loved you, and prayed for you and snuggled you through the scary times? Remember their other words about life and responsibility and accountability.

Motivation

Do not be drunk with wine; but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18

The love of a mother and the leadership of a dad are the best bookends in life. – TWEET IT

Prayer

Father, help me to seek You, and love You, and learn from You.
