Proverbs 19:11: The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression.

Insight

Patience, extolled several times in Proverbs, stems from and is a mark of wisdom (“prudence,” also “understanding”). In contrast is one who is hotheaded and impatient. A prudent, patient man is not easily upset by people who offend him; in fact he overlooks offenses (cf. 12:16), knowing that to harbor resentment or attempt revenge only leads to more trouble. Overlooking them is his glory, that is, it is honorable. 1

Application

The only way to conqueror the sin of anger is to put on the provisions of God: Colossians 3:12–13 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

If you are able to put on all His provisions for you, then you will also be able to ask for forgiveness from others and offer forgiveness to others. Allow your memory to see Christ on the Cross for your sins. Is that image not enough to make right the wrongs you have done to others? Be patient by His power. Be forgiving by His love.

Motivation

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

Anger is a revelation of all the hatred and hurt that is still in the heart. – TWEET IT

Prayer

Father, please forgive me and deliver me from the sin of anger and its destruction.
