Proverbs 15:8–9: The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight. The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but He loves him who follows righteousness.

Insight

The Lord detests the sacrifice and the way of the wicked, as well as their very thoughts. God hates sacrifices offered by wicked people because those offerings are given hypocritically. Because “the way” (conduct) of the wicked is detestable, so are their sacrifices. However, the prayer of the upright pleases Him so He hears them. Offering sacrifices, an external act, is no substitute for a life of righteousness, which obviously God loves. 1

Application

Philippians 4:6 gives us the insight we need as we approach Him in prayer: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

Now review this check list before praying:

  1. Trust God and do not be anxious.
  2. Be willing to pray about everything.
  3. Pray for others.
  4. Pray for yourself.
  5. Pray with a thankful heart, knowing Who you are praying to.
  6. Bring all your request to Him.

Motivation

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:24

Praying with humility and the right motive is very pleasing in His sight. – TWEET IT

Prayer

Father, forgive me for selfish prayers. Please teach me more about a humble heart.
