Jesus is Essential
John 19:28: After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
John recorded the fifth saying, I am thirsty. The wording indicates that Jesus was fully conscious and was aware of fulfilling the details of prophecies. The paradox of the One who is the Water of life dying in thirst is striking. Putting the vinegar-soaked sponge on the end of a hyssop plant stalk seems odd. Perhaps this detail points to Jesus dying as the true Lamb at Passover, for hyssop was used in the Passover ceremonies. 1
Walking with Jesus
Read Ephesians 5:15-21. How can “being filled with the Spirit” help you in your walk with Jesus, and in your relationship with others? How thirsty are you for Him?
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37–38
Only He can satisfy a thirsty soul.
Praying
Lord, thank You for being the Living Water that is always available.
