Jesus is Essential
John 18:6–11: Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.” Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”
Peter’s sword symbolizes rebellion against the will of God. Peter should have known that Jesus would be arrested and that He would willingly surrender to His enemies. Peter made every mistake possible! He fought the wrong enemy, used the wrong weapon, had the wrong motive, and accomplished the wrong result! He was openly resisting the will of God and hindering the work that Jesus came to accomplish! While we admire his courage and sincerity, it was certainly a demonstration of zeal without knowledge. 1
Walking with Jesus
Are you a weapon in the hand of the enemy, or are you a blessing in the hand of the living God? Do you fight spiritual battles in the flesh, or in the power of the Holy Spirit? Do you know how to let God fight your battles? Read 2 Corinthians 10:3-6.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds. 2 Corinthians 10:4
It is much better to respond to your opposition in love and not react in anger.
Praying
Lord, teach me to surrender my will for the pleasure of drinking from Your cup.
