Jesus is Essential
John 14:2–4: In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
Jesus has gone to “prepare a place” for us. That is a key element of our comfort. Many of us love having guests in our homes, and we lovingly prepare for them. We set out flowers and books we think they will like and lovingly ready a room for them. Jesus is preparing wonderful homes for me and for you, and that brings us comfort in this troubled world. Some people say this is escapism, that we are being so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good.
I do not think so. We may be so pious that we are no earthly good. We may be so religious that we are no earthly good. We may be so impractical that we are no earthly good. But I do not believe we can be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good. The reality of our heavenly abode helps us guard our troubled hearts. Is our heavenly abode real to us? When we plan family vacations, do we just drive off with no prior preparation? No way! We obtain brochures, we talk to our friends, we examine maps and pack our bags. How much more we ought to prepare for eternity, for our heavenly home will be wonderful beyond words. 1
Walking with Jesus
The best preparation for heaven is our devotion to Him on earth. Is your devotion to Him seen in the way you treat others? Is it lived out with a surrendered attitude of humility?
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 5:1
We prepare for disasters, but often ignore preparing for departures.
Praying
Lord, I am so excited to see what You have prepared for me. Thank You.
