Jesus is Essential
John 13:13–17: You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Jesus asked the disciples if they understood what He had done, and it is not likely that they did. So, He explained it: He had given them a lesson in humble service, an example for them to follow. The world thinks that happiness is the result of others serving us, but real joy comes when we serve others in the name of Christ. The world is constantly pursuing happiness, but that is like chasing a shadow: it is always just beyond your reach. Jesus was their Master, so He had every right to command their service. Instead, He served them! He gave them an example of true Christian ministry. 1
Walking with Jesus
Do you believe that true joy is found in serving others? Explain the blessing you received when someone served you? Why is it more blessed to give than to receive? What should our attitude be when serving our family, and serving our fellowship?
Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus. Romans 15:5
The best way to serve Jesus is to serve others, just like He has served us.
Praying
Lord, teach me to pursue You through humility, and servanthood.
