Jesus is Essential
John 8:52–56: Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
True disciples of Jesus are hated by the world. Jesus had been trying to tell them since the beginning of the discussion that he did not stand alone in witnessing the truth of his message. In fact, it was not his message at all but the message of the Father, the one they claimed as their God. Interpretations of these verses must recognize two different Greek verbs translated by the English word know in verse 55.
These religious leaders did not know God by experience (oidao), but Jesus knew him by personal relationship (ginosko). Jesus came to tell them the truth about his relationship with the Father. 1
Walking with Jesus
Explain your relationship with God based on the following three areas: intellectually, personally, and experientially. Give an example of each. What is the proof that the Father is looking for…in your relationship with KNOWING His Son?
I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:3
Many know God intellectually, but few know Him personally and experientially.
