Jesus is Essential
Matthew 18:1–5: At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.
The disciples waited breathlessly for Jesus to name the greatest man among them. But He bypassed them completely and called a little child into their midst. This child was the example of true greatness.
True humility means knowing yourself, accepting yourself, and being yourself—your best self—to the glory of God. It means avoiding two extremes: thinking less of yourself than you ought to (as did Moses when God called him), or thinking more of yourself than you ought to. The truly humble person does not deny the gifts God has given him, but uses them to the glory of God. 1
Walking with Jesus
What causes the “greatness meter” in the Kingdom of God to move forward? Are you more interested in making a great name for yourself, or in making God’s name great? Please note: Jesus is not asking us to become childish. He is requesting that we become child-like.
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Romans 12:3
Seek to know His greatness, instead of pursuing your own.
Praying
Lord, teach me to become more dependant upon You for everything, just like a child.
