Jesus is Essential
Matthew 10:16–20: Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
The Lord’s words to the apostles concerning the response to their ministry were not encouraging. Their task would be difficult for they would be like sheep among wolves (false prophets are spoken of as “ferocious wolves”). It would be essential for them to be wise in avoiding danger but harmless in not forcibly opposing the enemy. “Innocent” translates (lit., “unmixed, pure”).
It is used only twice elsewhere in the New Testament. In carrying out their ministries the apostles would be taken before their own Jewish leaders and flogged and be brought before Roman governors and Herodian kings. But the messengers need not worry, for the Holy Spirit, called here the Spirit of your Father, would give them words to say that would free them from arrest. 1
Walking with Jesus
What have been the wolves in your life? How have you been wise against their attacks? What have you done to protect yourself and others from their deception?
For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. Romans 16:19
A wolf generally looks like a Bible carrying Christian, until you see his teeth.
Praying
Lord, thank You for warning Your church about the deceptive trouble from within.
