Jesus is Essential

Matthew 13:33–35: Another parable He spoke to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.” All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

These parables are examples of the many that Jesus told the crowds (verse 34). In Jesus’ teaching technique, Matthew finds another Old Testament prophecy fulfilled, quoting from Psalm 78:2 to hint that Jesus revealed through His parables truths that were being heard—or at least understood—for the first time.

What an advantage we have over the disciples: they took His words concerning the kingdom’s growth on faith; we have the accumulated evidence of two thousand years of Christian history. 1

Walking with Jesus

How much leaven does it take to ruin a fellowship? What is the best way to destroy leaven? Pray for the continual purifying work of the Holy Spirit through repentance.

He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Psalm 1:3

Leaven is the favorite little ingredient that Satan uses to weaken the church.

Praying

Lord, thank You for teaching me the secrets of life, through the parables of your Word.
