Psalm 59:1: Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; Defend me from those who rise up against me.

Experiencing Jesus in the Psalms

Defend me from them that rise up against me. Saul was a king, and therefore sat in high places, and used all his authority to crush David; the persecuted one therefore beseeches the Lord to set him on high also, only in another sense. He asks to be lifted up beyond the reach of his adversary. Note how he sets the title My God over against the word mine enemies. This is the right method of effectually catching and quenching the fiery darts of the enemy upon the shield of faith. God is our God, and therefore deliverance and defense are ours. 1

Living the Transformed Life

To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear. Luke 1:74

  • He will defend you, so when you are feeling weak and defenseless, call upon Him.
  • He will defend you, so when you are overwhelmed with temptation, call upon Him.
  • He will defend you, so when you face critical opposition, call upon Him.

The One who will defend you, is also the One who will lead you into victory.

Praise and Prayer

Thank You, Father, for You being my Savior and my Great Defender. Dear Jesus, please teach me to call upon you, to defend me. I want to rest in You, and in all your provisions for me.
