Revelation 2:5: Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.

Jesus and His Word

“First love” can be restored if we follow the three instructions Christ gave. First, we must remember (literally “keep on remembering”) what we have lost and cultivate a desire to regain that close communion once again. Then we must repent—change our minds—and confess our sins to the Lord (1 John 1:9). Third, we must return to the firstworks, which suggests restoring the original fellowship that was broken by our sin and neglect. For the believer, this means prayer, Bible reading and meditation, obedient service, and worship. 1

Jesus and His Ways

  • Jesus, I remember walking away from Your light and back into the darkness. I ignored Your Holy Spirit. Forgive me. – “You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.” Galatians 5:4
  • Jesus, I repent from my sins, and turn back to You. – “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.” Acts 17:30
  • Jesus, I return to that place of fellowship with You. Prepare me and use me for Your purposes and for Your glory. – “He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Luke 1:17
