Proverbs 25:27: It is not good to eat much honey; So to seek one’s own glory is not glory.
Insight
We know honey is good, in moderation. It is not good to eat too much honey. A man’s own name and reputation is honey to him. Let him preserve it carefully. Yet there is danger in seeking fame and even the good name of one’s church rather than godliness. Few ministers have not been severely exercised in this. They are tempted to cherish the desire for public approbation rather than to be content with unnoticed fruitfulness. It is most welcome to recall that what men esteem highly is detested in God’s sight. 1
Application
Paul instruct’s us in Philippians 2:3 “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”
