Proverbs 25:11: A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.

Insight

I’m sure we all know some dear Christian who has a reputation of being able to say just the right thing at the right time—“a word fitly spoken.” There was a dear saint of God who lived in Tennessee. She had a reputation for always saying something very nice to the preacher at the end of every morning service. People would linger to hear what she had to say, because there were times they couldn’t think of anything good to say about the sermon that they had heard. And one time they had a visiting preacher who was just a little worse than any they had ever had before. I tell you, people were interested that morning. What in the world could she say nice to that preacher about the sermon he had preached? So when she went out, she said to him, “Pastor, I want you to know that I did enjoy your sermon, because this morning you had one of the most wonderful texts in Scripture.” Now that is “a word fitly spoken.” 1

Application

The prophet Isaiah encourages us in 50:4:

“The Lord God has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary.

Will you ask God right now, who you can encourage today with a timely word or even a text message? I believe God wants to use you. If you ask Him, He will direct you to just the right person that is weary and needs to receive a word of encouragement.

Motivation

The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth. Ecclesiastes 12:10
