Proverbs 12:25: Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.
Insight
A heavy heart is a weighty sickness; it makes us stoop under its unbearable burden. But how a kind word cheers [us] up. “This maxim therefore points out an easy and cheerful way to being useful” (Scott). Here we realize the precious efficacy of the Gospel. It is full of kind words. Human sympathy may give temporary relief. But “that is the grace, softer than oil, sweeter than roses, that flows from the Savior’s lips into the sinner’s wounds; and being poured into the contrite heart, not only heals, but blesses it, yes, and marks it out for eternal blessedness. Oh, how sweet is the voice of pardon to a soul groaning under the burden of sin!” (Leighton). 1
Application
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 – “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” This is a good word from Jesus for you today. Will you come to Jesus in faith? Will you come to Jesus in hope? Will you come to Jesus in love? If you come to Jesus in humility, you will leave Jesus in the fullness of faith, hope, and love. He has a good word to comfort your heart today. Will you receive it?
Motivation
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:7–8
