John 8:19–20: Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.” These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.”
They are reflecting on His birth again. Notice that Jesus calls God “my Father” in a different relationship from what you and I have with Him through faith in Christ. We become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, but Jesus is His Son because of His position in the Trinity. He is God the Son, and He addresses God the Father. This has nothing to do with generation or regeneration, but it has everything to do with His position in the Trinity. “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.” There is no middle ground. If you are going to know God the Father, you must come through Jesus Christ. There is no other way. 1
