With tuition costs skyrocketing each year, students are now paying more than $50,000 for a college degree and are graduating as an alcoholic.
Here’s why drinking remains one of the greatest social problems on college campuses.
Consuming More than Lectures
A Harvard University survey reports that 47% of student drinkers consume alcohol to get drunk.
WWU received nearly 1 million dollars to aggressively deal with the problem. Even with a grant of 100 million dollars, the results would basically be the same. After a period of sincere effort, a marginal percentage of improvement will be reported that justifies the research, educational strategies, and promotion of healthy alternatives.
Unfortunately the problem will remain deep and wide. It takes more than human compassion and available programs to get life changing results from personal addictions that are issues of the soul.
Here are the startling statistics:
- 74% of college students consumed alcohol within the past 30 days
- 83% were under the age of 21
- 49% engaged in drinking five or more drinks in a row
After drinking students admitted doing something they now regret like verbally insulting a friend, becoming violent, vandalizing someone’s stuff, disturbing neighbors or a non-partying roommate, experiencing forced sexual touching and having unwanted sexual intercourse.
Acceptance and Approval from Peers
So why do students drink?
They think it will help break the ice, relax them in order to have more fun, start new relationships, and give them confidence to talk openly and be funny.
But the thirst of students is not really for the beers.
There is a godly desire of the soul for lasting relationships built on respect, trust, mutual love and a hunger to be part of a community that sincerely loves and cares for each other. Because of divorce and emotional instability in many homes, this next generation is starving for love, acceptance and approval–and is looking in all the wrong places.
Just as drinking has consequence, so does rebelling against or ignoring God. Alcohol is only a substitute that never satisfy and only breaks hearts.
Under the Influence of Another
Jesus is inviting anyone consumed with alcohol to His table and to His home. Would you like to eat and drink with Him? Would you like to experience the intoxicating love of His Holy Spirit, overflowing from your life?
Are you ready to be loved, forgiven, and directed by the God who died on a cross for you and prays for you every day?
You are free to do what you want, but you are never free from the consequences of what you’ve done or what you will do while under the influence of alcohol.
Would you like to be free from the slavery to alcohol?
Only time sobers a person up. Do you have time for God? He has made time for you. He knows your name. Are you ready to call out to Him for help? Jesus Christ will heal you and set you free today. May God bless your new relationship with Him!
