The letter also concludes with the exhortation to hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The letter to Sardis is a searching message to churches today that are full of activity and housed in beautiful buildings but are so often lacking in evidences of eternal life. Christ’s word today is to “remember,” “repent,” and “obey,” just as it was to the church in Sardis. 1

- Jesus, please open my eyes to see Your faithfulness, and my ears to hear Your truthfulness. Forgive me for failing to trust You during the difficult times. – “Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand; And seeing you will see, and not perceive; For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.” ’ Acts 28:26–27
- Jesus, thank You for giving the Holy Spirit to all who are saved. Forgive me for failing to come to Your living water to drink freely of Your life-giving Spirit. – “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63
- Jesus, thank You for Your patient love. Forgive me for failing to listen to You. – “Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.” 2 Samuel 7:22
