His Eyes of Fire

Jesus and His Church

Revelation 2:18: And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass.

Jesus and His Word

This longest letter to the churches is addressed to the least known church. Dye manufacturing was an important industry in Thyatira. The purple dye was made from a root instead of from shellfish. Garment weaving, pottery making, and brass working were also trades known to have existed in Thyatira. Thyatira had a temple dedicated to Tyrimnos, an ancient sun god. The gospel may have been brought to the city by Lydia of Thyatira who was converted under Paul’s ministry in Philippi. The city is commended in Revelation for its deeds, love, faith, service, and perseverance, but it is rebuked for tolerating the false prophetess “Jezebel.” The eyes and feet of the Lord are stressed. The image of eyes like “flames of fire” indicates Christ’s ability to search the minds and hearts of believers. 1

Jesus and His Promise

But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62
