Discipleship Living

Think Before Speaking

Discipleship Living: Proverbs

Proverbs #:#: The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

Insight

The man who walks in the fear of God will weigh his words, lest by a hasty utterance he dishonor his Lord and hinder where he desires to help. The wicked has no such consideration, and speaks whatever comes to his lips, let it do what harm it may. People often actually pride themselves on being frank and outspoken; if truly aroused to the value of words, they would weigh them well before giving them out, and thus save much sorrow. Because a thing is true, it is not necessarily a fit subject to be discussed, and passed on from one to another. The righteous will consider carefully its bearing for good or ill before uttering what can never be fully recalled. 1

Application

In Ephesians 4:29, we are given perhaps some of the greatest advice regarding communication: β€œLet no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

Will you try this today? Will you withhold your quick comment, and study how best to answer? Will you think about imparting grace instead of criticism? Will you think about using words that build up, instead of tearing down?

Motivation

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Matthew 12:34

Prayer

Father, teach me more about sharing Your heart in communicating with others.
