Psalm 91:1–2: He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Experiencing Jesus in the Psalms
The psalmist expressed his great confidence in the fact that whoever trusts in the Most High finds security and protection. The titles of God (Most High and the Almighty) are significant, for they stress His power as the sovereign Ruler of the world. The images of the shelter and the shadow vividly portray divine protection. “Shelter” is a hiding place. The shadow, perhaps the shadow of a bird’s wing, also pictures shelter and protection as well as comfort. God is also the believer’s Refuge “shelter from danger” and … Fortress “strong protection”; admirably expressing the fact that safety is in the Lord. 1
Living the Transformed Life
And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. 1 John 4:15–16
- How do you know if your abiding with Him? Do you quietly seek to fellowship with Him before the day begins?
- How do you know if your abiding with Him? Does the love of God rule your life?
- How do you know if your abiding with Him? Do you hide yourself under the shadow of His truth, or do you find your identity under the shadow of social media?
Abiding in Him means your life is no longer moored in the world’s harbor.

Thank You, Father, for being my shelter, and my fortress, and my comfort. Dear Jesus, please teach me more about the abiding life with You, and in You.
