The Temptation

Discipleship Living: 1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians 10:13a: No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man;

A temptation is any inducement to sin. The verb here means that which “takes” or “overtakes” a person. Whatever temptation overtook you in the past, Paul tells the Corinthians, was only of the human kind, such as comes to a human being, and such as a human being may endure. What Paul means by “human” temptation he himself states in the next sentence, a temptation which God keeps within our ability to endure. The devil is behind every temptation that assails a Christian. 1
